- <p> DIED. TELLY SAVALAS, 70, hawk-nosed, bald-pated actor whose
- role as the gruff, lollipop-licking Lieut. Theo Kojak became
- a prototype for two decades of gritty TV police dramas; of prostate
- cancer, the day after his birthday, in Universal City, California.
- Born Aristoteles Savalas, the actor first shaved his head in
- 1965 for the part of Pontius Pilate in The Greatest Story Ever
- Told. Nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for Birdman of
- Alcatraz (1962), he finally won immense popularity with the
- TV series Kojak, which ran from 1973 to 1978. He took an Emmy
- for the role in 1974, becoming, in spite of his hairlessness,
- a sex symbol, greeted everywhere by fans with Kojak's signature
- line, "Who loves ya, baby?"
